Summer … Coming Soon

By Hilary Berg

Although it’s almost June (as I write this letter), the weather outside feels more like the middle of February. Today’s forecast? Rainy with a high of 54°F.

Just a couple weeks ago, it was in the 80s with not a cloud in the sky. Now, it’s wet, windy and darn right chilly. Not cool, Mother Nature, not cool.

Merely days ago it definitely was not cool but warm with a breeze that whispered sweet-somethings — or should I say, suggestions — like “roll out the grill; make some sun tea; plant your tomatoes...”

Assuming the weather warms up soon, I am excited and ready for a fantastic summer in wine country.

Sunny days point to farmers markets in many towns, including the biggest one in Oregon, the Beaverton Farmers Market. I was surprised to discover how incredibly expansive it is with so many quality vendors that you almost have to have a detailed schedule and budget to get in and out without spending the whole day and your entire paycheck in a matter of hours. Summer also signals family vacations. May I suggest venturing to the eastern Gorge? Not only is there wine, but lots of sunshine, too.

Freelance writer Mark Stock and photographer Andrea Johnson recently traveled to The Dalles and reported back a grand time and plans to return soon. It wasn’t just the vitamin D that impressed the two, but the people, the scenery, the wineries and more.

Many don’t necessarily think of The Dalles when it comes to vacation or vines, but after reading OWP’s cover story , you’ll realize this unique area is an important component of the cuvée that has become Oregon wine.

Did I mention The Dalles is mostly sunny, with a (high) chance of an excellent experience?

Ahh, just what this editor ordered.
