Abacela

Founded in 1995 in the Umpqua Valley, Abacela was the first winery in Oregon and the PNW to plant Tempranillo.  Dedicated to exact variety-climate matching, Abacela grows numerous varieties suited to our region and site, earning acclaim for producing consistently expressive and distinctive wines from our estate vineyards.

Our family’s passion for Spanish Tempranillo inspired a change in careers and move across the continent to attempt what had never been done; produce world class Tempranillo wine in America.  Our focus was to find, not soil, but a regional climate similar to Spain’s famous Tempranillo producing regions.

In 1995 we planted the first commercial Tempranillo vineyard in the PNW and named our effort Abacela, from the ancient Spanish word “Abacelar” meaning to plant a grape vine.  Success came early; our 1998 Tempranillo stunned the wine world in an International Competition by winning first place with a Double Gold against storied Spanish Tempranillos.

Encouraged that site-climate matching had proven successful with Tempranillo and other early-planted planted varieties, we continued trials with other varieties that were new to Oregon and/or the US. This led to success with Albariño, Malbec, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Nacional, and others.

Today we farm 16 grape varieties that have proven to be a great match on our 76 acre estate.  Our philosophy is simple; sustainably grow the highest quality fruit possible and produce wines with exceptional quality and character that bring history, tradition, and innovation together in every bottle.
