Ashland Contemporary Theatre (in association with Oregon Stage Works) is thrilled to begin its 2016 season in Ashland’s stunning new performance space, The Vineyard Stage at Grizzly Peak Winery, with the State of Jefferson area premiere of John Logan’s 2010 Tony Award winning play, “RED.”

It’s a pivotal time: in 1958, the brilliant and temperamental painter Mark Rothko begins a two year journey to complete a highly lucrative commission of murals for what will become Manhattan’s most exclusive eatery: The Four Seasons Restaurant. Ken, Rothko’s fresh-out-of-art-school assistant, begins to uncover the secrets behind Rothko’s art, and in doing so reveals the secret of his own past. As the two struggle to create Rothko’s iconic paintings, there comes an understanding between the great Abstract Expressionist and his young charge about the place art holds in our lives generation after generation, from the past to the present and for what is to come. “RED” is a breathtaking drama about artistic vision, commitment and maturity.

Equity actor Peter Alzado (Artistic Director of Oregon Stage Works) returns to the Ashland stage in the role of Rothko; S.O.U. Theatre graduate, Reece Bredl, plays Ken. The production is co-directed by Alzado and ACT Artistic Director, Jeannine Grizzard.

ACT’s production of RED will inaugurate Ashland’s grand new performance space: The Vineyard Stage at Grizzly Peak Winery. The new winery building is ideal for recreating Rothko’s studio. This is the performance venue the Ashland community has been waiting for!

In the adjacent lobby space, there will be an art show of abstract work entitled: “ACT & Friends,” featuring paintings by Mabrie Ormes, Jane Hardgrove, Isabelle Alzado and several others.

The show runs for two weekends at Grizzly Peak: March 11th at 8pm, 12th at 2pm and 8pm, 13th at 2pm and March 18th at 8pm, 19th at 2pm and 8pm and 20th at 2pm.

Performances for the remaining two weekends will be held at the Ashland Community Center, downtown: March 26th at 2pm and 8pm, 27th at 2pm, and April 2nd at 2pm and 8pm and 3rd at 2pm.
