Summer’s Steady Market

Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University is one of the biggest and best in the state. Photo by Andrea Johnson.

It is just about time to retire the grocery store club card for the year. The many browns of Oregon are giving way to green, meaning fresh produce by the pound, bushel and bunch is only days away.

A tradition as old as agriculture itself, the farmers market is more than a gathering place for the hungry. It marks the beginning of the region’s long and bountiful growing season, an energizing period strengthened by long days and colorful ripening schedules. In short, Demeter, the Greek goddess of the Abundant Harvest, would be very happy here.

Grapes and grub are never far apart. Under tents across the state, seasonal fruits and vegetables mingle with locally produced wines. In fact, with much of the produce raised on valley floors and much of the wine grown in surrounding hillsides, it feels like the perfect performance. While orchards bloom below, the vineyards watch from their balconies above. And just when the symphony approaches its finale in early fall, the grapes rise to their feet for a standing ovation.

The state’s many American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are surrounded by farming districts. Tasters can stop in Newberg or Dundee for markets on their journey though the northernWillametteValley. In the Gorge, many of the wineries are flanked by pear orchards and never far fromHoodRiverorThe Dalles, where markets reign. In the south, bustling markets frame the Rogue and Applegate valleys. Even in northeasternOregon, where Cab and Merlot bask in the heat, lively markets enrich the towns ofBakerCity,Enterpriseand Hermiston.

There is the old-school class, consisting of wineries like Crumbled Rock in Dundee. Here, when the year’s crop is especially generous, owner Julia Staigers sets out excess zucchini, peppers and butternut squash from her garden for tasters to take away. At RoxyAnn inMedford, the winery hosts a market weekly starting in June. Attendees can stroll through stands of heirloom tomatoes while tasting wine, bunching two complementary figures of agriculture under one roof: The farmer and the winegrower.

There is the new class, which blends classic agrarianism with contemporary culture. Take Yamhill Valley Grown, a community of growers who sell online. What’s available changes weekly, and, in a sense, it feels a bit like an auction, only the prices are fixed and the ingredients always fresh.

Mushrooms, grains, meats and much more are purchased through an online account and then assembled within the week, to be shipped straight to your home or picked up inEugeneat Hideaway Bakery. Yamhill Valley Grown intends to return much of the profit to the farming community, via new growing sites, heightened wages and increased sustainability practices.

Larger cities have not strayed from their rural roots.EugeneandCorvallishave renowned market scenes. InPortland, six neighborhood markets make up the largest collaborative in the state. None is bigger than the market atPortlandStateUniversity, nearly 20 years old and a weekend institution forRoseCitydwellers.

Thanks to fairly recent OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control Comission) upgrades, wineries like Arcane Cellars and Nehalem Bay Winery can pour their releases beside fresh goat cheese, homemade vinegars and grass-fed lamb, to name a few. The idea itself is not new. However, with scores of vendors featuring ever-changing goods likely harvested that very morning, the experience feels fresh every time.

Eaters are wise to approach pairings with the same seasonality farmers do.

In the spring, when rhubarb and asparagus fill market crates, bet on wines with lively acidity like Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.

In summer, when grills are pulled out and the cherries and tomatoes arrive, go heavy to match barbecue — Cab Franc, Tempranillo — and light or sweet to pair with fresh fruit —Muscat, late-harvest Gewürz.

Come fall, with squash, spuds and sprouts, Pinot Noir is king, not too strong for veggies and not too wimpy for gamey, slow roasted meats.

Better yet, ask those who know best: the farmers and the winegrowers at your friendly neighborhood farmers market.
