2014 Pinot Noir Futures
Tasting Notes

Block 1
This is our lowest elevation block, starting at 525 feet elevation and facing South by Southwest. Part of the original planting in 1990, this block has contributed to the Reserve and Dundee Hills bottlings in past vintages, as well as being the source of our beloved rosé of Pinot Noir. After a few short weeks in the barrel, this wine is showing red fruits such as raspberry, red cherry, and currant. The palate is full and creamy, with a savory finish of umami.

Block 10 Pommard Whole-Cluster Fermentation
Topping out at 750 feet, Block 10 is the highest elevation block of our vineyards. In 2013 we experimented with using the un-crushed whole-clusters of Pinot noir from Block 10, in contrast to our usual practice of removing all of the stems. Pleased with the results, we continue the experiment in 2014. This is the only 100% whole-cluster Pinot Noir that we will have available from the 2014 vintage. The stems add a delicious layer of aromatics such as cloves, cinnamon, and cedar boughs. Blackberries and a subtle sweetness carry through the wine, with fine tannins and anise contributing to a long finish.

Block 9 Corner
Most of our vineyards are planted in uniform blocks of a single clone paired with a single rootstock. However, as we finished planting our vineyards, we had an assortment of clones and rootstocks in small quantities. That was the origin of the Corner section of Block 9, approximately 1 acre planted to several different clones including the Dijon clones 667, 777, 113 and others. From the 2014 vintage, the wine from that section immediately stood out as exceptional. The wine is very aromatic, with lavender, lemongrass, and blood-orange scents coming through. Delicious, mouth-watering acidity leads to a full mid palate, with hints of graham pie crust on the finish.

Wadenswil Clone
With only two very small sections of our vineyard planted to the Wadenswil clone of Pinot Noir, we have never had enough fruit for a separate bottling. Instead it has gone into our Reserve and Dundee Hills blends. With the generous yields of 2014, we were able to fill one small fermenter and ended up with just two barrels of delicious wine. The nose is earthy and robust, quite a contrast from our other clones. Blue fruits and plum are supported by full tannins that coat the sides of your mouth. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and other baking spices linger on the finish.
